US Soccer finally released the U-20 and U-23 rosters today, three days after the dates on the articles. Fortunately, the women’s soccer world has other ways to get its news, instead of the official outlets.
As of yesterday, the US U-20 WNT is in a week-long camp near San Diego. Dave Chesler is still in charge of that, and he’s brought in a slightly different group from what he saw in January. This roster will play a match against USD on February 19.
GOALKEEPERS (3): Emily Oliver (Stanford), Abby Smith (Dallas Texans), Caroline Stanley (Missouri)
DEFENDERS (6): Abby Dahlkemper (UCLA), Megan Fuller (Ohio State), Bri Hovington (Penn State), Jaelene Hinkle (Texas Tech), Kasey Kallman (Florida State), Ariana Martinez (UCLA)
MIDFIELDERS (8): Morgan Brian (Virginia), Kaysie Clark (Missouri), Michelle Cruz (Portland), Alex Doll (Stanford), Lindsay Elston (Washington), Julie Johnston (Santa Clara), Sarah Killion (UCLA), Samantha Mewis (UCLA)
FORWARDS (7): Kelly Cobb (Duke), Arin Gilliland (Kentucky), Maya Hayes (Penn State), Tawni Martino (Loyola Marymount), Mollie Pathman (Duke), Taylor Smith (Florida State), Katie Stengel (Wake Forest)
We still have quite a few of our 2010 U-17s in there, and there are still those three holdovers from the 2010 U-20s (Hayes, Mewis, Pathman). Some of the players have been called in under different positions from last time. It’s nice to see the Mizzou commits in the mix, and it’s far too early to complain about names that haven’t been on this roster or the previous one. (But not too early to cheer for Santa Clara’s Johnston making her second roster in a row.)
In other buried news, the U-23s are off to La Manga, Spain, next week. More than half the roster are (potentially) pros now.
GOALKEEPERS (2): Adrianna Franch (Oklahoma State; Salina, Kan.), Bianca Henninger (Santa Clara; Los Gatos, Calif.)
DEFENDERS (6): Amber Brooks (UNC; New Hope, Pa.), Becky Edwards (Western NY Flash; Downingtown, Pa.), Lauren Fowlkes (Philadelphia Independence; Lee’s Summit, Mo.), Nikki Marshall (Washington Freedom; Mead, Colo.), Elli Reed (Western NY Flash; Park City, Utah), Keelin Winters (Boston Breakers; Englewood, Colo.)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Katie Bethke (Atlanta Beat; Eau Claire, Wis.), Sinead Farrelly (Philadelphia Independence; Havertown, Pa.), Meghan Klingenberg (Washington Freedom; Gibsonia, Pa.), Casey Nogueira (Sky Blue FC; Raleigh, N.C.), Ingrid Wells (Georgetown; Montclair, N.J.), Kylie Wright (Atlanta Beat; Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.)
FORWARDS (4): Sarah Hagen (UW-Milwaukee; Appleton, Wis.), Melissa Henderson (Norte Dame; Garland, Texas), Stephanie Ochs (San Diego; San Diego, Calif.), Katie Schoepfer (out of contract; Waterford, Conn.)
That’s a pretty solid roster, full of YNT regulars, but I’m curious as to what the chances are that our Nordic Cup roster will resemble this. It’s interesting that Chantel Jones, a YNT regular, has not been on either U-23 roster this year, despite being eligible.
Great to see Kaysie Clark back, with the U-20s now (and rejoining so many U-17 compatriots) – I was worried she was out of favor. But I wonder at Christen Press’s absence from the U-23s; she made the Jan camp, but not this tournament squad. Three U-23ers here were in the WNT camp, and now she’s been left off both…
Yeah, I know we aren’t going to see a perfect recreation of that U-17 team (nor should we) but is nice to see so many of them getting looks the past two months. Out of curiosity, has it been confirmed that Press wasn’t invited? I could see her having good reason to decline a La Manga invite given WPS business.
I wondered that myself; several of her WPS teammates are going, so it’s not a mTSC thing. She’s still in college, too – given that and the upcoming WPS preseason, she might not have been able to take the time. Unfortunate, though, given she’s not getting looks from the senior team either. (In other words, it’s nice to be Alex Morgan!)

This raises the question of whether dude’s just got his facts mixed up, or if we’re actually sending our U-23s to the Olympics. (Which, in my opinion, WOULD BE AWESOME.)
